Carol Ann Hagemann Buck
Mrs. Buck, 75, of the Belford section of Middletown, died July 23 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Hackensack, she resided in Woodridge, prior to moving to Belford 42 years ago. She was a clerk/secretary at Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, for 11 years, retiring in 1994. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Edward C. Buck; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Suzanne Marie Buck of Belford, Maryanne and Scott Motherway of Manalapan, and Maureen and Michael Connors of Hazlet; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be July 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy will be July 27 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, followed by burial at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo section of Middletown.
Phyllis Carol VanDerveer
Mrs. VanDerveer, 66, of Leesburg, Fla., died July 12. Born in Toledo, Ohio, she grew up as a “Navy brat,” spending her youth in Hawaii, Sipan, Peru, and Okinawa, Japan, as well as at every Navy base on the East and West coasts of the United States. She had resided in Englishtown for 29 years before moving to Orlando, Fla., in 1989 and then to Leesburg in 2003. Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Bob; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan VanDerveer Salvetti and Frank Salvetti of Freehold; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert VanDerveer Jr. and Deanna VanDerveer of Barboursville, Va., and Scott VanDerveer of Orlando; and four grandchildren, Nicholas and Carlo Salvetti and Elizabeth and Sarah VanDerveer. Funeral services were held at Beyers Funeral Home Chapel, Leesburg, with the Rev. Art Ayris officiating. Interment took place at Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park, Fla., with a grave-site committal. Beyers Funeral Home, Leesburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to a local human society or church.
Maria “Mary” Critelli De Stefano
Mrs. De Stefano, 97, of Spotswood, died July 2 at Saint Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick De Stefano Sr., in 2002. Mrs. De Stefano is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony and Cynthia of Monroe, Daniel and Patricia of Spotswood, and Patrick Jr. and Patricia of Spotswood; five daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Fred Byrne of Pennsylvania, Roberta and James Dittmyre of Spotswood, Mary Ann and Edward Strehl of Pennsylvania, Dolores and James Pope of Spotswood, and Patricia and Andrew Sanchez of Freehold; 26 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood. The Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick, was in charge of arrangements.
Glynn R. Ward
Mr. Ward, 82, of Spotswood, died June 27 at home. He was employed at Ford Motor Co., Edison, for 34 years, retiring in 1981. Mr. Ward was a former member of the Spotswood Board of Education and was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 35. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Meggison Ward; a son and daughter-in-law, Glynn and Loraine Ward of South Amboy; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Virginia Ward and Edward Linzer of Spotswood, Janis and Kevin Becker of South Amboy, Joyce Haslach of Sayreville, and Christine and Tony Giunta and Lisaann Ward, all of Freehold; and 10 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial services were held at Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood, followed by entombment at Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick. The Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick, was in charge of arrangements.
Elsie Althoff Jones
Mrs. Jones, 95, of East Brunswick, died July 3 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge. She was predeceased by her husband, John A. Jones, in 1994; a brother, Fred Althoff; and a sister, Helen Wheeler. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Geraldine Jones of Manalapan; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Ron Anderson of East Brunswick; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Interment was at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, East Brunswick, under the direction of Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick.
Sophie S. Mahtook
Mrs. Mahtook, 82, of Freehold, died July 18 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Throop, Pa., she had lived in Dover for 52 years before moving to Freehold nine years ago. Mrs. Mahtook was a homemaker and a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Farmingdale. Mrs. Mahtook was predeceased in September 2000 by a daughter, Hedy Akstulewicz, and in February 1987 by a granddaughter, Alyssa Mercadante. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, James Joseph “Joe” Mahtook; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and David Mercadante of Freehold Township; a son-in-law, Walter Akstulewicz of Freehold Township; a brother, Michael Swenton of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, along with two of their spouses; and a great-grandson. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Vona officiating. Interment followed at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall Township. The Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, was in charge of arrangements.
Thomas F. Buble
Mr. Buble, 47, of Freehold, died July 1 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Neptune, he had lived in Freehold all his life and was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. Mr. Buble was a heating equipment mechanic for Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colts Neck, for 23 years. Surviving are his wife, Doris; a son, Scott Buble of Freehold; two daughters, Kristie Buble of Long Branch and Kayla Buble of Toms River; his parents, Lorraine and Frank Buble of Freehold; a stepson, Alex of Freehold; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Jeanne Buble of Manasquan, and John and Maria Buble of Freehold; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and William Ackerman of Freehold; and a niece and two nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Charles Hendrick Whelan
Mr. Whelan, 54, of Little Silver, died July 16 at home. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident of Little Silver. He owned a private family chiropractic practice in Little Silver, for 20 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Colts Neck. Mr. Whelan was a member of the Garden State Chiropractic Society and the Monmouth/Ocean County Chiropractic Society. He was the founder and past president of the Jersey Shore Running Club, and took part in several marathons, triathlons and biathlons. He was predeceased by his father, Samuel Whelan. He is survived by his mother, Sylvia VanCleef Whelan of Little Silver; his former wife, Therese Gourde Whelan of the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township; his children, Matthew and Emily Whelan of Wanamassa; his stepchildren, Christina and James Sheehan of Colts Neck; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael S. and Connie Whelan of Ambler, Pa.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Carol Whelan of Little Silver, and Eileen and Pasquale Torchia of Oceanport; two nieces; and two nephews. Anna Mae Hafenbrak
Mrs. Hafenbrak, 87, of Freehold Township, died July 16 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Keyser, W.Va., she had lived in Colorado before moving to Freehold Township four years ago. She was predeceased in 2005 by her husband, Elmer Edwin Hafenbrak. Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Popham and Bethel Sage; a son, William C. Hafenbrak; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold.
Franklin D. Aughtry Jr.
Mr. Aughtry, 45, of Birmingham, Ala., died June 17 at home. He resided in Old Bridge before moving to Birmingham. He was predeceased by his father, Franklin D. Aughtry Sr., in 1996. Mr. Aughtry is survived by his mother, Dorothy Aughtry of Old Bridge; three brothers, Joseph Aughtry of Forked River, and Edward and Kenneth Aughtry, both of Jackson; three sisters, Barbara Young of Clementon, Karen Lyon of Freehold, and Kristin Kowalski of Marlboro; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements were by the Michael Hegarty Funeral Home, Old Bridge.
