Sophie S. Mahtook

Mrs. Mahtook, 82, of Freehold, died July 18 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Throop, Pa., she was a 1941 graduate of Throop High School. She had lived in Dover for 52 years before moving to Freehold nine years ago. She was a homemaker and a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Farmingdale. Mrs. Mahtook was predeceased in September 2000 by a daughter, Hedy Akstulewicz, and in February 1987 by a granddaughter, Alyssa Mercadante. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, James Joseph “Joe” Mahtook; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and David Mercadante of Freehold Township; a son-in-law, Walter Akstulewicz of Freehold Township; a brother, Michael Swenton of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, along with two of their spouses; and a great-grandson. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Vona officiating. Interment followed at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall Township. The Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, was in charge of arrangements.

Bryan G. Preston

Mr. Preston, 75, of Freehold Township, died July 16 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in the Ridgewood and Glendale sections of Queens, N.Y., before moving to Freehold Township in 1996. Prior to retiring in 1992, he was a driver for the U.S. Postal Service in Flushing, N.Y., for 20 years. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Preston had served in Korea. He was also a parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine R.C. Church, Freehold Township. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Preston of Freehold Township; three daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Kevin Vesey of St. James, Long Island, N.Y., Patricia and John Putre of Mahopac, N.Y., and Jacqueline and Gary Fuchs of Manalapan; a brother, John Preston of Minnesota; and eight grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, followed by burial at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. Thomas F. Buble

Mr. Buble, 47, of Freehold, died July 1 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Neptune, he had lived in Freehold all his life and was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. Mr. Buble was a heating equipment mechanic for Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colts Neck, for 23 years. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Surviving are his wife, Doris; a son, Scott Buble of Freehold; two daughters, Kristie Buble of Long Branch and Kayla Buble of Toms River; his parents, Lorraine and Frank Buble of Freehold; a stepson, Alex of Freehold; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Jeanne Buble of Manasquan, and John and Maria Buble of Freehold; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and William Ackerman of Freehold; and a niece and two nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Elaine Conway

Mrs. Conway, 91, of Freehold Township, died July 14 at home. Born in Keyport, she had lived there before moving to the Freehold area 56 years ago. A former legal secretary, she had worked in Keyport. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, where she also belonged to the Rosary Altar Society. Mrs. Conway was predeceased by her husband, Leonard J. Conway, in 1998, as well as four sisters, Helen Boland, Edna Casper, Mabel Colaner and Gladys Wenger. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward L. and Jennifer Conway of Freehold Township, and Robert J. and Vicky Conway of Palm Coast, Fla.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a niece, Sally Perna. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township.
