Suspect charged with theft from business

LONG BRANCH – A city man was placed under arrest last week for the alleged burglary of a Broadway business.

Willie Platts, 53, was arrested Aug. 26 and charged with burglary after police allegedly recovered numerous pieces of jewelry from Big Brazil in his possession, according to police reports.

Platts was additionally charged with criminal mischief, theft, resisting arrest and obstruction, according to police.

Police had responded to the Pearl Street alley for a report that a suspicious male wearing a camouflage jacket and black pants had just broken a window to a residence in the neighborhood, police said.

Upon arrival, Officer Sam Yoo located Platts and observed him throw a white object onto a nearby rooftop.

According to Yoo’s account, the man could not provide an accurate account for being in the area and became combative as the officer continued with the investigation.

Platts became involved in a physical altercation with Yoo, according to reports.

Police placed Platts under arrest and reported finding cash, as well as the jewelry, in his possession. Police also recovered the object thrown by Platts and identified it as the cash register from Big Brazil.

Platts’ bail was set at $25,000 with no 10 percent option.
