Monmouth Park to host thoroughbred festival

An upcoming one-day festival will celebrate New Jersey’s best-born thoroughbred horses.

On Sept. 16, Monmouth Park will host the fourth annual New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival, presented by the Malouf Auto Group in conjunction with the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey, according to a Monmouth Park press release.

The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey (TBANJ) is an organization dedicated to fostering and promoting the breeding and ownership of thoroughbred horses in New Jersey.

Located in Oceanport, Monmouth Park has a one-mile, 100-foot-wide main track, as well as a newly installed turf course in preparation for the 2007 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, according to the release.

There will be four stake races and $700,000 in purses for state-bred horses competing during the festival. The feature race will capture the $125,000 Jersey Breeders’ Handicap, the press release said.

New Jersey-born horses expected to compete during the festival are Joey P., Who’s The Cowboy, Meadow Blue and I’mtoogoodtobetrue, according to the press release.

“We are excited that Monmouth Park will again be hosting the thoroughbred festival,” Mike Campbell, executive director of TBANJ, said in the press release.

Campbell continued in the release, “The park offers such a diverse audience and a full day of activities for families, that we certainly enjoy showcasing our best breeds at this venue.”

Family activities during the festival will include free pony rides, face painting, clown shows, music and more. All paid admissions also receive a free fall blanket while supplies last, according to the press release.

“While we spend a majority of our summer hosting unique events at Monmouth Park, the thoroughbred festival allows us to focus on the horses and the people from New Jersey that compete here year after year,” Bill Knauf, the director of marketing at the Monmouth Park Racetrack, said in the release. “Every year, we look forward to growing this event and highlighting New Jersey-breds, especially with the 2007 Breeders’ Cup coming to the state.”
