Tennis nets RHS’s first varsity win

"The Robbinsville High girls’ varsity tennis team" is now the answer to a pretty good trivia question which kids who attend the school 10 years from now will be sure to kick around.
By clobbering Trenton 5-0 on the road last Thursday, the Ravens’ girls’ varsity tennis team became the first Robbinsville High athletic team to ever win a varsity game or match.
"We’re in the record books now. Who would have thought it?" said Guy Dippolito, the head coach of the Ravens.
At first singles Liz Zupp had too many shots for Trenton’s Angelica Richardson as she posted an easy 6-1, 6-0 win. "Lizzy (Zupp) was very consistent and she hit a lot of passing shots," added Dippolito.
Robbinsville’s Jennifer Aquaro (second singles), Elana Quiroja (third singles), Stephanie Schwartz and Amy Scheiner (first doubles) and Erika Hawxhurst and Melissa Siedelhofer (second doubles) were even more overpowering as they all posted shutouts over their Trenton opponents. Overall, it was a very good natured match on everyone’s part.
"They were all having fun. They (the Ravens) were actually very polite because they knew they (the Trenton players) were beginners," said Dippolito.
Robbinsville found itself in Trenton’s shoes on Friday as a more polished Allentown squad captured a 5-0 decision over the Ravens at Robbinsville. Although Megan Rice topped Zupp 6-4, 6-1 at first singles, Zupp played a wonderful first set. Moreover Allentown’s Alana Heifetz had to reach down deep to pull out a 7-5, 6-2 win over Aquaro (second singles).
"She (Aquaro) battled hard. She had a lot of long points and by the second set she was exhausted," Dippolito said.
On Monday a powerful Hopewell Valley team beat Robbinsville 5-0 at Robbinsville. Zupp (first singles), Schwartz and Scheiner (first doubles) and Hawxhurst and Seidelhofer (second doubles) were the only Ravens to win any games in the match.
"Our enthusiasm remains high," said Dippolito, who sees no quit in his team.
Robbinsville (1-2) was scheduled to have played at West Windsor-Plainsboro North yesterday (Wednesday). It is scheduled to host Steinert on Friday. Robbinsville is scheduled at Lawrence on Monday and at Hightstown next Wednesday.
