Doug Deutsch of Hopewell Township is new rep
By John Tredrea
Central High School Principal Michael Daher introduced the high school’s new student representative and alternate student representative to the school board at Monday night’s meeting.
They are senior Doug Deutsch of Hopewell Township and junior Lauren Sheidler, also of Hopewell Township. Lauren will replace Doug next year, continuing a practice the school board has followed for many years.
According to school board policy, student representatives "facilitate awareness by board members of the point of view of the district students. They are nonvoting participants in all school board activities (except personnel or excluded matters in closed sessions). They are appointed for one year. They will conform to all academic and social standards required for membership on the executive board of the Student Council and adhere to rules and standards required of regular board members."
"Doug is a bright and capable student," Mr. Daher said. Doug’s grade-point average is 97.8. His schedule this year includes advanced placement courses in calculus, physics, government and politics and English literature and composition.
"Doug is also a fine musician," Mr. Daher said. "He’s an accomplished pianist and plays the viola in the school orchestra."
A member of the National Honor Society at Central High, Doug also does volunteer work at the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, where he gives music lessons. Mr. Daher said Doug’s current plan is to apply for early acceptance to the University of Pennsylvania.
Lauren has a 99.4 GPA and is academically ranked in the top five students of the Class of 2008. She has been a member of the Student Council Advisory Board for two years, plays varsity soccer and lacrosse, and is a member of Hopewell Township’s Youth Advisory Committee.
Her current aspirations are to enroll in a pre-med program at college. Schools she currently is considering are Georgetown, Richmond, Northwestern and Wake Forest.
