S.B. Community Education classes begin Sept. 23
South Brunswick Community School is now accepting registration for classes that begin Sept. 23 with defensive driving. Classes run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., and other dates available are Oct. 21, Nov. 18, or Dec. 16.

Dedication, pet blessing slated at S.B. church
St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Sand Hills Road, South Brunswick, will dedicate its three new classrooms following its 10:30 a.m. service Sept. 24. The spaces were completed with the aid of 20 parishioners as well as contractors.
The church will celebrate St. Francis Day with a blessing of the animals service Oct. 1 at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited, along with pets on restraint, for the half-hour service. Weather permitting, it will be held outdoors.
An offering will be to benefit the North Brunswick Humane Society to be split between its efforts at the Edison animal shelter and to be transmitted to the Long-Term Hurricane Relief Committee, for efforts on behalf of animals in the Gulf Coast.

Tree of Hope event in
N. Brunswick Sept. 27
The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) of Middlesex County Inc., and Princeton House Behavioral Health will host the fifth annual “Tree of Hope” ceremony Sept. 27 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Princeton House, North Brunswick.
The NCADD annually awards a “Tree of Hope” to an organization that promotes recovery within Middlesex County, and this year’s recipient is Princeton House. Princeton HealthCare System’s offers services such as behavioral healthcare, acute rehabilitation, and fitness and wellness services. It will be honored with the dedication of a live evergreen tree. Ornaments will also be sold to commemorate recovery efforts of individuals, with all proceeds benefiting NCADD.

Plays-in-Park to stage ‘Schoolhouse Rock Live’
Plays-in-the-Park, Middlesex County’s summer theater, will offer performances of its 14th annual indoor children’s musical, “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Too!,” at noon and 3 p.m. on Oct. 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22 in the 150-seat black box in the Stephen J. Capestro Amphitheater in Roosevelt Park, Edison. The theater is handicapped accessible.
Tickets cost $2 for children, $3 for adults, and are available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays-Fridays, at the Plays-in-the-Park production office at the back of the Capestro Amphitheater, located off Route 1 south, just south of the Menlo Park shopping mall.

Fresh Ponds Chapel anniversary Sept. 24
The Methodist Episcopal Church of Fresh Ponds, Fresh Ponds and Davidson’s Mill Roads, South Brunswick, will celebrate its 166th anniversary Sept. 24 at 3:30 p.m. The event will be followed by a potluck supper in the schoolhouse-community hall.
The nondenominational church became part of the Gospel Mission Corps in 1963. The South Brunswick Church of the Nazarene uses the chapel and schoolhouse for Sunday School and mornings worship, and various groups use the building for gospel meetings. The church also houses meetings of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, International Organization of Good Templars, Central Jersey Chapter of Order of St. Luke, Eastern Villages Association of South Brunswick, and Take Back Our Town.

Jewish history panel will sponsor lectures
The Jewish Historical Society of Central Jersey, New Brunswick, will offer two upcoming lectures.
Dr. Mildred Goodwin, professor emeritus, New Jersey City University, Jersey City, will present a program titled “The Jewish Experience in Reel Life” at 10 a.m. on Oct. 9 at Congregation Etz Chaim, Monroe Township Jewish Center, 11 Cornell Ave. Goodwin, who has taught classes in English education and media studies at Jersey City University, continues to teach adjunct courses at several colleges and universities, sharing her lifelong interest in all aspects of theater and cinema.
A lecture titled “Net Gain: Finding Family on the World Wide Web” is set for 10 a.m. on Oct. 18 at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, New Brunswick. Guest speaker will be Sandra Lanman, assistant director of media relations, Rutgers University Foundation, New Brunswick. Lanman has used the Internet extensively while researching her family’s history.
