The Princeton Township Committee has indefinitely suspended an application by Verizon Corp. for municipal consent to provide television services as the company pursues a system-wide franchise application before the state’s Board of Public Utilities.
A township hearing on the application was initially scheduled in July, but Verizon had asked the township to postpone public comment until legislation before Gov. Jon Corzine had been signed, an action that occurred in August.
The legislation does not take effect until November, Doyle Siddell, public information officer for the Board of Public Utilities, explained, which is when Verizon will pursue its system-wide franchise application. Verizon has also submitted 92 municipal applications throughout the state, he added.
If the state board approves Verizon’s application, it would no longer need to go from municipality to municipality to offer its service and it would withdraw its application currently before the township.
