Alex Melman received a Giant hybrid bicycle at the Hopewell Harvest Fair on Saturday
Hopewell Valley Central High School senior Alex Melman has earned first place in the Lawrence-Hopewell Trail (LHT) T-shirt design competition.
Central High art teacher Robert O’Boyle organized the competition at the suggestion of Hopewell Township Deputy Mayor David Sandahl, who represents the township on the LHT Executive Board.
Alex received his prize, a Giant hybrid bicycle donated by Harts Cyclery, at the Hopewell Harvest Fair on Saturday. His winning design will be on display at Hopewell Valley Central High School, and on the Lawrence-Hopewell Trail Web site, www.lhtrail.org.
The Lawrence-Hopewell Trail is a joint community project inspired by Bristol-Myers Squibb that involves the two townships, Mercer County, D&R Greenway Land Trust, Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, Saint Lawrence Rehabilitation Center, and Educational Testing Service. It is conceived as a 20-mile loop of multiuse trail that will become a hub for a network of local pedestrian/bike trails and provide nonmotorized transportation and exercise opportunities for all ages.
In Hopewell Township, a segment of the trail has been completed on the Bristol-Myers Squibb research campus, and work is under way at the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association to build an additional segment. Township officials are also hoping to extend trails from the LHT loop to local school and recreation facilities.
