Letters to the editor

Simple solutions exist for busing dilemma

Editor’s Note: This is the complete version of a letter that appeared in the Sept. 28 edition that was not received in its entirety.

To the editor:
In response to David Layton’s letter of Sept. 21 regarding the looping situation for busing children to and from Chesterfield Elementary School, I would suggest that parents that are not pleased with the current situation do what our family has done for the past seven years: drive you child/children to and from school in your own vehicle. This is an option.
The "gimmie gimmie gimmie" attitude by some parents with children in Chesterfield Elementary School confuses me, because some parents will say they want what is best for their children, yet they don’t think this includes putting on their coat, warming up the car, and being the last person their child sees when they start their day, or the first person they see when the school day ends. The bus ride isn’t the great big social event children, or parents, may think it is. If children feel the need to ride to and from school with friends, perhaps car-pooling is a solution. Our family has done this, too.
The bottom line is: if parents don’t like what time their children arrive home by bus looping, I sincerely suggest they grab their car keys and go pick them up. Chesterfield Elementary School is required to educate our children; not make our lives easier. I applaud the Chesterfield Board of Education members for their fiscal responsibility in this situation.
