MONTGOMERY A free flu vaccination clinic for senior citizens has been scheduled for November, with pre-registration already open.
The township’s Health Department encourages people over 65, and any adult with chronic health problems, to get an annual flu shot.
A flu vaccination clinic is slated for Nov. 8 at the Otto Kaufman Community Center on Skillman Road. This year, shots will be available on a reservation basis only. Walk-ins will be accommodated only if extra vaccine is available, township officials said.
"By calling the Health Department, our residents will get a designated appointment and a reserved shot," said Health Officer Stephanie Carey. "This will prevent long lines and traffic jams on clinic day. Although many people prefer to receive the flu vaccination in October, getting the shot in November and December is just as effective."
Pneumonia vaccines will also be available. Unlike the annual flu shot, pneumonia vaccines should be taken every five to 10 years, officials said. Residents should check with their doctor to see if they are due for a booster. Pneumonia shots will be offered to those at-risk people who have not had the shot in at least five years.
The township does not offer pediatric vaccines, officials said. Those who do not have health insurance for their children should call the Health Department for a referral to the township’s Child Health Clinic.
To reserve a flu shot, call the Health Department at (908) 359-8211, ext. 227. Seniors should bring their Medicare card. Adults under 65 with chronic health problems should bring a doctor’s note or other proof of risk factors.
