Art lectures set at St. Matthew’s

Lectures set Sundays beginning Oct. 15 and running through Nov. 5

Exploring how an artist gathers ideas and emotions and turns them into a finished product will the subject of a series of lectures presented on four successive Sundays at St. Matthew’s Church, Pennington, beginning Oct. 15 and running through Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
Pennington resident Pam Krisulewicz, formerly professor of art at Alabama’s University of Montevallo and a Pratt Institute graduate, will explore the topics of faith, art, imagination and truth in both Christian and secular art. Classes will cover many forms of representational art including painting and sculpture. She hopes to make understanding art less intimidating and to provide a window into an artist’s creative process. "In general, the production of art is a multilayered event. The artist must gather ‘information’ and distill, shape and varnish it. The finished product can speak to us in many ways," commented Ms. Krisulewicz.
Each session will focus on a different aspect of artistic creation and the public can attend a single session or all four in the series. The course covers a wide range of topics beginning with looking at ways of interpreting art, understanding how to immerse oneself in art as meditation, and seeing how various styles of art including traditional Christian art and nonreligious art can lead to meditation and devotion.
A final class will be held on Nov. 11 with a guided tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Cloisters Museum in New York City. Participants will examine a number of works in the museum’s collection as they practice skills developed in the class
All classes are free of charge and open to the public. No preregistration is required. For more information, call 737-0985 or visit: www.st.matthews-nj.org.
