A 23-year-old Princeton man was charged with eluding police and driving while intoxicated following a car and foot chase with police early Monday morning.
Police said Inocencio Gijada was charged with eluding police, resisting arrest, driving while intoxicated, unlicensed driver, uninsured driver, careless driving and driving without a seat belt after police chased him to an open field on Route 27, police said.
South Brunswick Police received a report from the Plainsboro Police Department at 1:15 a.m. that there was a possible drunken driver in a red Chevrolet Camaro with North Carolina license plates heading north on Route 1 and onto Raymond Road, police said.
About a minute later South Brunswick Patrol Officer Mike LaPoint was almost hit by the Camaro, which was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Route 27, police said.
Officer LaPoint turned around and attempted to stop the Camaro, but Mr. Gijada drove about two more miles before turning into a long driveway on Route 27.
Mr. Gijada put the vehicle in reverse, got out of the vehicle and ran down the driveway, while the Camaro, which was still moving, struck the patrol car, police said.
Officer LaPoint got out of his car and ran after him, chasing Mr. Gijada through several backyards and down a driveway toward Route 27. Police said Mr. Gijada’s pants kept falling down, which caused him to fall. However, Mr. Gijada was able to pick himself up and run across Route 27, where Officer LaPoint tackled him in a grassy field, according to police.
Mr. Gijada was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and treated for injuries he suffered when he fell during the chase. He was then transported to Middlesex County Correction Center in default of $10,000 bail, police said.
