John Moore and his wife, Grace Moore, were uninjured in the kitchen fire that broke out in their 603 Scotch Road home in Hopewell Township early Monday afternoon.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Police and fire officials are investigating the blaze, which Ms. Moore reported at 12:28 p.m. by calling 911.
"The entire house received damage fire, heat, smoke and water. The house is uninhabitable," said Hopewell Township Police Chief George Meyer Tuesday.
"Ms. Moore had been outside of her home for a brief period of time and upon returning inside found the house filling with smoke," Chief Meyer said.
"Mr. Moore was inside the home in another area and unaware of the fire until he was alerted by his wife. Both of the Moores exited the house. Police officers arrived to find heavy smoke billowing from the front of the house, followed shortly by heavy fire," the chief said.
The Pennington Fire Company, under the direction of Chief Stewart Schwab, responded to put out the fire.
Pennington was assisted by crews from the Hopewell Fire Department, Union Fire Company, West Trenton Fire Company, Lawrenceville Fire Company, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services Unit and the Pennington First Aid Squad, which took the Moore couple to Capital Health System’s Mercer Campus to be checked out.
Township Patrolmen Chris Kascik and Kevin Zorn investigated, along with the county fire marshal and county prosecutor’s office.
