The Hopewell Valley Central High School girls tennis team could only advance so far in the NJSIAA tournaments.
Moorestown knocked Hopewell out of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III team tournament on Tuesday and Kyle Johnson at first singles and Caitlin Dalton and Becca Wolf at first doubles, were eliminated in their respective state tournaments over the weekend.
Moorestown, the top seeded team, swept the Bulldogs, 5-0. Johnson lost first singles, 6-3, 6-0.
"Kelsey’s match was more even than the score shows," said Hopewell coach Alma Quinlan. "Her match was pretty competitive."
Hopewell’s second singles player, sophomore Kylie Smith, lost 6-1, 6-0, while junior Alexis Devaney fell 6-3, 6-4 at third singles.
Dalton and Wolf lost 6-1, 6-4 at first doubles and Eva Truyan and Avanti Suresh lost 6-0, 6-2, at second doubles.
"We played ok, but we could have played better," said Quinlan. "It’s about playing better more often than not, that’s the gauge of a good team. We are a good tea, Moorestown is a great team."
Hopewell advanced to the semifinals by defeating Freehold Boro, 4-1.
Johnson won first singles, 6-3, 6-3, Devaney tookk third singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, Dalton and Wolf claimed first doubles, 6-4, 6-1 and Truyan and Suresh won second doubles, 6-1, 7-5.
"We knocked off a good team," said Quinlan. "It was good to make it that far."
In the NJSIAA Singles and Doubles Tournaments Hopewell players advanced out of the first round but ran afoul of higher-seeded players.
Just making the doubles tournament shows how capable Dalton and Wolf are.
"This is the first time in my 10 years coaching that I sent a doubles team," said Quinlan
