A memorial for Shirley A. Shaffer, 35, of Tudor Place, who was found dead on the railroad tracks between Auten and Valley roads early Monday, will be held today (Thursday).
Police said they were notified by Norfolk Southern Railroad at 3:58 a.m. that one of its westbound trains had struck a person lying on the tracks. Police and rail workers found Ms. Shaffer’s body about 75 yards east of Valley Road.
Investigators ruled the death a suicide, police said.
Ms. Shaffer was a member of the Ladies of Auxiliary of Hillsborough Fire Company No. 2 and worked at Shoprite on Route 206. She was married to longtime firefighter Bill Shaffer, third lieutenant and vice president of the fire company.
She is survived by her husband and their three children, 12-year-old twins Becky and Stacey, and an 11-year-old son, Tommy.
The memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. today (Thursday) at Hillsborough Funeral Home. Ms. Shaffer will be cremated following the services.
The family asked that memorial donations be sent to Hillsborough Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 2, 375 Route 206, Hillsborough, 08844.
