Safety first in Cranbury

When it comes to safety, there’s always more Cranbury residents can do, resident Rob Smithers said.
Community members will have the opportunity to learn the latest ways to protect themselves during the free Cranbury Homefront Security Seminar at the Cranbury Inn on Wednesday. The seminar will be hosted by Mr. Smithers, the CEO of Miercom, who is a Republican candidate for Township Committee.
The seminar, which begins at 7 p.m., is open to all residents and is one of a three-part series to help residents safeguard themselves against threats like identity theft, domestic violence, domestic terrorism, Internet predators and pedophiles and computer viruses.
The other seminars, scheduled to take place in November and January, will focus on emergency preparedness and how to use green energy.
Mr. Smithers, whose firm evaluates and tests for security weaknesses in computer networks, is a major in the U.S. Army Reserves for Civil Affairs, Military Police and Engineer Corp. He has been conducting anti-terrorism training at United States military and nonmilitary facilities around the country for the past two years and is involved with assisting the government with Homeland Security.
"I’m trying to put the grass roots into what I’ve been doing on the federal level for terrorism and security," he said. "I think it could do wonders to increase your awareness."
The seminar was originally slated to begin at 7:30 p.m., but was changed to 7 p.m. so that residents can also attend the open space meeting at Town Hall at 7:30 p.m.
