Keeler: Dems can’t have it both ways
To the editor:
While I do not find its existence surprising, I feel the apparent acceptance of the idiocy and, less than pellucid, reasoning exhibited in many of the letters appearing in this paper in opposition to the Republicans running for office this year should be questioned.
How convenient it is to assign all the progress Hightstown has made under Mayor Patten’s term in office to the Borough Council and, yet, shift blame for anything that did not go as one would like over to the mayor. Is there any possibility that the same council which, with regard to the rug mill project, dragged its feet, asking questions previously answered and disregarding the work of the Planning Board, etc., etc., ad nauseam, may have exhibited the same behavior on other issues, and that Mayor Patten was the driving force in keeping an opposition council on track and focused on the tasks at hand?
Further, to assume, as does one of the Democrats’ most fervent supporters, that Bob Patten, together with council candidates Ron Neibo and myself are opposed to property tax reform because our combined property taxes are less than those of our Democratic opponents is, at best, absurd.
How refreshing it would be to hear from the opposition their clear plans for Hightstown, as opposed to hearing what they don’t like about their opponents in this election. On one hand, steak; on the other, sizzle. The readers of this paper deserve more of the former but receive way too much of the latter.

Patten: Let’s focus on the positive
To the editor:
"Character is ultimately who we are expressed in action, in how we live and what we do." (Robert Coles).
Hightstown’s character is being tested right now. I do not want the negativity of the current political campaign to overshadow the good things that are happening in our town. Consider these exciting events:
* The Greater Goods Thrift Store finally has a home! Its new location at 413 Mercer St. (Lucas Electric Building) will be abuzz with volunteers this weekend as they begin painting and preparation for their grand opening. Please join them!
* East Windsor Regional School District’s Open House will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Please come see for yourself the finished job in all six schools! Bravo!!
* Congratulations to Chief John Archer and Hightstown’s finest Fire Company #1 the first responders at last week’s intense fire at Meadow Lakes.
* Wish Arinthia Owens a happy 105th birthday on Nov. 1! Cards may be sent to Hightstown Housing Authority, community building office, 131 Rogers Ave. and they will be delivered at her celebration.
* While I’m at it, happy birthday to Charlie Davison, too, who turned a mere 95 last week. Must be our great Hightstown water!
* The beautiful fall season … get out and enjoy the beauty of our Peddie Lake, the fall foliage and enjoy a stroll on the Roger Cook Greenway.
Let’s focus on the good things happening right now in Hightstown that really define our character!
Bob Patten
Hightstown mayor
