Door-to-door food drive

Cub Scouts to collect donations on Sunday

By: Bill Greenwood
South Brunswick Cub Scouts kicked off their annual Scouting for Food drive last weekend by distributing about 10,000 collection bags to homes throughout South Brunswick.
Scouts, who return this Saturday and Sunday, hope to grab those same bags, this time filled with food to be donated to the South Brunswick Food Pantry.
"We really hope that everyone puts food out on the weekend," Social Services Director LouAnne Wolf said.
Those who wish to make a donation are asked to fill their bag with food before the pickup date, which is printed on a slip inserted inside each bag, said Frank Gramieri, scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 888. Participants should then place the bags outside their home by the time listed on the slip for collection by the Scouts.
Anyone who doesn’t have a bag is asked to leave donations outside their homes and mark them "Scouting for Food," said Mr. Gramieri.
"We do apologize if, for whatever reason, we may have missed someone’s home, but our work force is a bunch of people who are volunteers, and they’re trying their best," he said.
The food collected will go toward the Social Services holiday program, which provides food for those in need during Thanksgiving and the December holidays, according to Ms. Wolf.
"It’s most important (to have a food drive) around the holiday times because nobody wants to see anyone go without holiday food," Mr. Gramieri said.
Those who wish to participate in the food drive should provide nonperishable items to be used in a holiday meal, like stuffing, gravy, canned sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn muffin mix, cake mix, brownie mix, coffee, tea and boxed macaroni and cheese, according to Ms. Wolf.
She added that size three, four and five disposable diapers are also sorely needed.
Mr. Gramieri said a list of needed items is printed on each bag.
