Free fitness class offered seniors at Princeton Family YMCA

The notion that exercise is good for you has been around for quite a while, but despite the known benefits of physical activity, older people tend to become less active with age.
The health, fitness and well-being of the senior population are of increasing concern in today’s society. These days seniors prefer to remain in the community in their own homes. Their strong desire for independence has increased the demand for community-based services specifically designed for them — such as the Princeton Family YMCA’s "Silver Sneakers" program.
"Silver Sneakers" provides an innovative strength and conditioning class designed to meet the unique health and physical needs of seniors. Studies show that older inactive adults lose ground in four areas that are important for staying healthy and independent: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility.
"Silver Sneakers" is a non-impact aerobic workout which focuses on increasing muscular strength, balance, endurance and flexibility. The class is easy on joints and appropriate for individuals who exercise as well as those who may not have exercised in years.
"Silver Sneakers" is an equipment-based conditioning class taught with a chair for optional support, hand-held weights, and elastic tubing. The format includes a wide variety of exercises for the upper and lower body designed to improve daily activities.
"Silver Sneakers" runs at the Princeton Family YMCA Monday and Wednesday from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m. and Friday from 12:15 to 1 p.m.
