"SMART Security: Sensible, Multilateral American Response to Terrorism" is the title of the 27th Annual Conference and Interfaith Service for Peace sponsored by the Coalition for Peace Action and co-sponsored by 40 religious and civic groups in the region on Sunday at Princeton Public Library.
Retired Army Major Gen. Kermit Johnson, a former chief of Army chaplains, will preach at the interfaith service at 11 a.m. at Princeton University Chapel. Faith leaders from many traditions will lead the liturgy. The service is free and open to the public. A free-will offering to support the ongoing work of the coalition will be received.
The conference is from 1:30 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room of Princeton Public Library, 65 Witherspoon St. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, but will also be offered at the door starting at 1 p.m. if the event is not sold out in advance. Registration fees per person are $25 for members of the Coalition for Peace Action, $40 for non-members and $15 for those of limited income. Students are free.
Confirmed speakers include Democratic U.S. Rep. Lynn Woolsey of California, primary sponsor of a SMART Security Resolution in Congress; Dr. Randall Caroline Forsberg, Spitzer Professor of International Security Studies at City University of New York and initiator of the Nuclear Freeze Campaign; Ira Shorr, field director of Physicians for Social Responsibility; Jeffrey Laurenti, senior fellow at the Century Foundation; and Dr. Lisa Schirch, professor of peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University who has worked in regions of conflict around the world.
