Year ends in 1-0 loss

Even the great C.J. Dixon couldn’t save his Bordentown Regional High boys’ varsity soccer team, which lost a 1-0 decision at Somerville (seeded 2nd) on Tuesday.
The loss eliminated the Scotties (seeded 3rd) from the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II playoffs.
Playing their usual brand of great defense, the Scotties held Somerville off the scoreboard in the first stanza. But in the 63rd minute of the contest, Danny Reynolds smoked a 10-yarder past Dixon for the only tally of the game.
The Scotties collected six shots in the contest while Somerville had 11. Dixon made in five saves in a losing cause.
This year the Scotties set a school record with 13 shutouts. Their coach Mike Brennan believed that this year’s team was better than his team that made the Group 1 State Finals last season. He may be right because the Scotties competed in Group II this year, where the play is much stronger. Eric Bijou, Mike Brown, "Marvelous" Marvin Carter, Dean Kreiser, Cory Mahoney, Jesse Harrison, C.J.Dixon, Chris Mallett, Chris Phipps, Willie Steinman, Steve "Turbo" Turgyan and Matt Vanekohoven should all be commended for having terrific senior seasons.
Though it is losing a lot of players, Bordentown is not done yet. Players like D.J. Kafer, Kyle Creegan and Kenny Eckelmann will help set the bar high for the Scotties’ next year. Bordentown’s best sports team this fall has a bright future ahead of it.
