Just before the holiday frenzy begins, the West Windsor Arts Council is offering "Flavor of the Arts," a relaxing day of music, song, children’s literature and a celebration of locally grown food at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, located at MarketFair in West Windsor, on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The day begins at 11 a.m. with a reading by children’s book author Deborah Heiligman. The author of 19 books, Ms. Heligman’s most recent editions teach young folk about the holidays.
At 12:30, West Windsor Farmers’ Market co-founder Beth Feehan will talk about sustainable agriculture and farms-to-school programs. She is working with the West Windsor-Plainsboro Schools to bring farm-fresh produce into lunchrooms, including apples from Terhune Orchards in Princeton. Ms. Feehan will recommend her favorite books on food.
At 2 p.m., Jeff Nathanson and his band, Back Porch Swing, will take the mike. Back Porch Swing plays acoustic music including modern and traditional jazz, gypsy swing, "dawg" jazz, blues and rockabilly pretty much anything that swings.
At 3 p.m., Bob Mecklenburger, who has been performing with his acoustic 6- and 12-string guitars for more 40 years, will sing original and well-known folk songs.
"Flavor of the Arts" is a fundraiser for the West Windsor Arts Council. Barnes & Noble is donating up to 20 percent of the sales of books, music, magazines, café gift items and all other merchandise to the West Windsor Arts Council, but purchasers must present a voucher at the cash register at the time of purchase.
Vouchers will be distributed in advance and will be available at the cash registers on the day of the event, but will only be given if they are specifically requested. Purchasers who hold Barnes & Noble member cards will still be eligible for the discount while using the West Windsor Arts Council vouchers.
