Ideas sought to preserve old high school
By: Mae Rhine
We like this growing trend among municipal officials of inviting the public to discuss projects, land acquisitions, possible developments and other issues before a plan is developed or received.
In the latest move, Lambertville planners are asking residents to come to its meeting Dec. 6 to discuss what to do with the site of the old Lambertville High School and about 17 adjacent acres. They also want to know more about the site’s history.
The site has been eyed by developers in years past, but nothing has ever been approved.
Now citizens can sit down and talk with officials about how best to preserve this historic tract and building.
The former high school is in a sad state, however. Built in 1854, it was remodeled in 1926 before closing. It suffered heavy damage from fires in 1955 and 1992 and is an empty shell of its former glory. Preserving it would be a tough job.
We urge Lambertville Historical Society members, preservation experts and anyone else who is concerned about the site to attend this meeting to hammer out a solution.
The site now attracts vandals and young people who want to party out of view of police, who are forced to patrol the area frequently.
The area deserves to be cleaned up and preserved as part of the city’s rich history.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Justice Center on South Union Street.
