ROCKY HILL Former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman will be making a special appearance 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Mary Jacobs Library.
The author of a best-selling political memoir, "It’s My Party Too: The Battle for the Heart of the GOP and the Future of America," she is expected to talk about the results of the recent election and its impact on New Jersey and the nation. The program will include time for questions and comments.
In addition, the former governor has agreed to sign copies of her book that attendees bring to the program.
The former governor is a critic of the Republican Party’s "social fundamentalist" wing. She wants to bring back the period when the GOP was like a "big umbrella" that sheltered diverse opinions around a strong central structure of shared principles and beliefs. Today, she says, the Republican Party is like a "closed umbrella, with room underneath its canopy only for that rigid central shaft."
In 1994, Ms. Whitman became the first female governor of New Jersey. She served for seven years in that capacity, then stepped into a cabinet position as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator in the Bush administration. Since leaving that office in 2003, she has founded an environmental consulting firm and a political action committee.
Former Gov. Whitman is a guest of the Friends of Mary Jacobs Library, a membership organization that supports the library and its programs.
The event is free, but seating is limited. Reserve seats by Dec. 4 by contacting the Friends of Mary Jacobs Library at (908) 281-6220 or [email protected].
