It’s the McMansion of commuter rail cars and West Windsor is getting its name attached to the façade.
One of the first nine NJ Transit multilevel rail cars that will enter service on Dec. 11 is dedicated to West Windsor and will display a plaque honoring the township as it races up and down the Northeast Corridor in New Jersey.
All nine cars are dedicated in recognition of the ties between NJ Transit and its host communities. The other honorees are Trenton, Hamilton, Edison, Rahway, Woodbridge, Elizabeth, Newark and Summit.
Each of the 234 multilevel cars on order will eventually display a commemorative plaque in honor of a community served by the rail network as they are delivered over the next two years.
The multilevel cars offer 15 to 20 percent more seating capacity than the latest generation of single-level cars and have two-by-two seating, eliminating the middle seat on one side of the car. They range from 132 to 142 seats with about half having restrooms.
The cars offer more legroom and seat width, large tinted windows, indirect ceiling lighting and blue tones intended to produce a restful passenger environment. There is an open, intermediate "mezzanine" level at each end of the car, featuring space for customers who opt to stand, as well as areas for wheelchairs, carts, strollers and luggage.
Each car features automated public address systems and LED destination screens to keep customers informed. The multilevels also feature external public address speakers, enabling conductors to make announcements to customers on the platform. Emergency intercoms are available throughout the carincluding a call-for-assistance button in the restrooms and improved anti-skid flooring is featured in the vestibules and restrooms.
