Township leaders laud retiring construction official

William White served township for 17 years

By John Tredrea
To put it mildly, many buildings have gone up and been renovated in Hopewell Township during William White’s tenure as the township’s chief construction official.
Mr. White took that job in 1989. He will retire Friday (Dec. 1), after dealing with the most explosive period of growth, by far, in the history of the municipality.
During the 17 years he has worked for the township, numerous residential subdivisions were built, along with many stores and offices, including Merrill Lynch’s Southfields off Scotch Road; the 1,300-unit Brandon Farms development in the southeastern section of the township; and a new shopping center at Route 31 and Denow Road, to name just a few.
Passed unanimously by the full Hopewell Township Committee Monday night was a resolution commending Mr. White for his "dedicated and dependable service" and wishing him well in the future.
The resolution states that, "due to Bill’s efficient management, the Hopewell Township construction office enjoys an excellent reputation within the community."
The measure adds that Mr. White’s "considerate style of management and emphasis on training have been appreciated by his past and present employees" and that he "has shown his professionalism in dealing with all types of commercial, retail and residential projects."
Also Monday night, the committee voted unanimously to appoint Christopher Rose as acting temporary construction official. Mr. Rose will be paid $38.85 an hour. His 60-day appointment begins tomorrow, Dec. 1.
