"We’re going to take our lumps, but the kids have the desire to turn this program into something," said Sharon Conover, the head coach of the first-year Robbinsville High girls’ varsity basketball team. "I have good athletes. Once they learn the game, they’re going to be good."
Although the team is young and inexperienced, Conover has great kids on the team who are all willing to work hard to improve. However, she’d love to see Robbinsville become more of a basketball town and have more local girls become involved in summer basketball programs and join travel basketball squads.
Robbinsville’s varsity roster is as follows: Shannon Boyne (a junior forward), Brittany DeAngelis (a junior forward), Courtney DeAngelis (a junior guard), Nicole Douglass (a junior guard), Kate Connolly (a sophomore forward), Laura Greb (a sophomore guard), Casey McGuigan (a sophomore guard), Emilie Taylor (a sophomore guard), Christy Wham (a sophomore forward) and Jen Bryan (a freshman guard).
Most of the athletes on the team have already proven themselves to be clutch performers in the fall varsity sports. However, for many of the girls, basketball is their second best sport. Conover would like to see that change in the coming years.
"I love coaching at Robbinsville," said Conover, who previously had a long and successful stint as the girls’ varsity basketball head coach at Bordentown. "Our goal this year is to be competitive within the CVC."
Robbinsville is scheduled to open its season with a road game at Trenton Central on December 15th. Last Friday the Ravens scrimmaged Delran, this past Monday they scrimmaged Holy Cross and yesterday (Wednesday) they scrimmaged Point Pleasant Beach. So they are getting tested by some pretty good basketball teams. But that’s the only way to get better.
