Area officials and first responders are munching on cookies thanks to local Girl Scouts but instead of the popular mint and peanut butter flavors, these cookies are homemade.
And best of all, sealed with a "Kiss" a Hershey’s Kiss.
The Scouts in Service Unit 11, their moms and Scout leaders gathered Monday night at the Adesa Auto Auctions office on North Main Street, assembling cookie trays using cookies the Scouts baked themselves.
The cookie trays will be given this week to police, firemen, rescue squads, senior citizens, food bank workers, mayors and municipal employees in Manville, Bound Brook and South Bound Brook. The service unit is comprised of Girl Scouts from the three towns.
Scout Bonnie Burris continues the service project that started about 10 years ago here in Manville.
"The girls and their moms make cookies and the girl go take a plate and pick up cookies," she said. "Once they are done, they go to the end of the table, get Hershey Kisses on top and they get tied up."
Each leader asked the girls in their troop to bake cookies.
"Every year we do this for a service unit project for holiday spirit to thank them for supporting the Girl Scouts and helping with their projects," said Janet Burris, leader of Troop 535.
The girls filled the plates and Scout Kimberly George was glad to be a part of this project.
"I feel good about doing this .. . (for) the firemen," she said. "We are helping people and (helping) make them feel good."
