A good meal can help save someone’s life
By: Mae Rhine
Too often, people don’t take advantage of what they term "government handouts" or "welfare" available to them through nonprofit organizations; they’re too embarrassed to ask for help.
That appears to be the case with Meals on Wheels in Hunterdon Inc., one of the few programs in the state that does not have a waiting list.
The organization wants to serve noon meals to more elderly or disabled people in the area. It delivers the meal to anyone who might have a problem preparing a meal, whether it’s because they are recuperating from being in the hospital, they’re disabled or their age prevents them from cooking.
The meals are prepared by a caterer and cost less than $5. And if you can’t pay that, you still get a meal; no one is turned away because of inability to pay.
Senior citizens can get a meal delivered or join others at Hibernia Apartments in Lambertville where there is time for socializing. The center offers bingo three times a week, cards once a week and other programs, Monday through Friday. You don’t have to live there to participate.
But right now, only about 10 people are showing up. And only 15 meals are being delivered Tuesdays and Thursdays and 30 to 35 the other three weekdays.
We know there are many more seniors and those either permanently or temporarily disabled who could use this service. The meals are nutritionally balanced and often include soup as well as a main course, vegetables, other side dishes, fruit and dessert.
If you know of anyone who could benefit from a good noon meal, call Meals on Wheels at (908) 735-8332.
And if you have the time, volunteer drivers and donations always are needed. Usually, they are asked to deliver meals to the homebound only one day a month.
In a recent case, a driver saved the life of an elderly person, who was in a diabetic coma. They got help right away because the agency will not leave a meal unless the driver sees that person.
And if you don’t have the time to deliver meals, donations are welcome, too. Send them to Meals on Wheels in Hunterdon Inc., P.O. Box 358, Quakertown, N.J., 08868.
