JAMESBURG A 28-year-old Monroe man died Tuesday after a tree fell on him while he was working on Woodland Road, police said.
Jerrold Love of Buckelew Avenue was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:38 p.m. after a tree he was removing with his father and brother collapsed onto another tree, which then fell onto him, police said.
"It was a very tragic accident," Acting Police Chief Paul Karkoska said Wednesday. "It was much more tragic because his family had to witness this. I just feel absolutely terrible for them."
Robert Love, 69, and his two sons, Jerrold, and Andre, 29, who owns and operates Love Tree Removal of East Brunswick, had been working at 33 Woodland Road all day, Acting Chief Karkoska said. Mother, Betty, also happened to be at the site, but was not working, he said.
A rope was tied to a 2-foot thick, 26-foot red oak and attached to a truck driven by Robert Love to provide tension. Andre Love was cutting the tree and Jerrold Love was standing at 54 Half Acre Road guiding the rope, Acting Chief Karkoska said.
"As the tree came down it hit another tree which fell onto (Jerrold)," he said. The tree, which was rotted at the base of its trunk, fell on Jerrold lengthwise, he said.
Jerrold Love’s body was taken to the Middlesex County medical examiner’s office in North Brunswick. According to the autopsy, Jerrold died of major multiple trauma, Acting Chief Karkoska said.
Robert Love returned to the Woodland home the next day to finish the job, Acting Chief Karkoska said.
