New direction sought for team

Mark Prelewicz, head coach of the South Brunswick High School football team, will not be returning to the sidelines next year.
Athletic Director Elaine McGrath said Wednesday the school decided to "go in a new direction" and seek a new head coach for the 2007 season. Mr. Prelewicz was informed of the decision Monday, she said.
"We do appreciate his efforts, his loyalty to South Brunswick football, and we wish him the best," Ms. McGrath said. Mr. Prelewicz will continue to teach physical education at the high school.
The school will begin the process of selecting a new head coach after Jan. 1, according to Ms. McGrath. The position will first be advertised, then a committee made up of staff members, administrators and a student-athlete representative will begin interviewing candidates.
"We’d like to move on it as fast as possible, but we’re not going to be hasty in our decision," Ms. McGrath said when asked how long she thought the process would take.
Mr. Prelewicz has coached in the high school football program since 2000. He served as defensive coordinator for two years under John Coppola and coached defensive backs in 2002 under Tony Maglione. In 2003, Mr. Prelewicz took over as head coach. His record over four years was 15-25.
In 2005, Mr. Prelewicz led the team to a 7-3 season, narrowly missing the CJ IV playoffs. However, the team slipped to a 4-6 record in 2006.
Mr. Prelewicz could not be reached for comment by the South Brunswick Post’s Wednesday afternoon dead- line.
