Evette Chaney, of Franklin Township, has been a teacher for 15 years and will be beginning her first administrative position as the new vice principal at Hillsborough High School.
"Hillsborough has an excellent reputation," Ms. Chaney said. "It seems like a very warm environment. I’m just super excited to be here. It’s something I’ve worked really hard for."
Since Karen Bingert, former vice principal, moved into the principal’s office, school administrators have been interviewing prospective candidates to fill the position. The hiring of Ms. Chaney was approved during Monday’s Board of Education meeting.
Ms. Chaney has been a Spanish teacher at Franklin Township High School for the past six and a half years. She also has taught at schools in East Orange and Maplewood.
She received her bachelor’s degree from Whitman College in Washington, her first master’s degree in Spanish, language and literature from Middlebury College in Vermont and her second master’s degree in educational leadership from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Ms. Chaney also spent a year in Spain studying the language.
"I’m very interested in improving learning," Ms. Chaney said, citing that as one of her goals for HHS. "That’s important to me."
Ms. Chaney said she is excited to work in Hillsborough and to get to know the students and the school environment.
During Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Karen Lake said Ms. Chaney went through a very rigorous selection process. Dr. Lake said Ms. Bingert set up a committee to meet with candidates before they were interviewed by Dr. Lake.
Ms. Chaney is expected to begin at Hillsborough High School in February, after a required 60-day notice to her current employer, at an annual salary of $82,000, prorated for the reminder of the school year.
