JAMESBURG — All rise for the honorable Judge Erin Shamy.
The Borough Council appointed Ms. Shamy, of Bradley Beach, to the position of Jamesburg municipal court judge Wednesday.
Ms. Shamy will serve a term of three years and will be paid a $13,000 salary.
"This has definitely been a career goal of mine," Ms. Shamy said after being sworn into office.
A Rutgers Law School graduate, Ms. Shamy has more than 10 years of courtroom experience, having worked as a Middlesex County prosecutor and municipal prosecutor for Helmetta and Spotswood.
"I’m excited," Ms. Shamy said. "It will take a little while to feel totally comfortable, but I am excited about the change."
Ms. Shamy will replace the borough’s current municipal court judge, Robert McGowan.
Mr. McGowan was appointed in October 2005 to complete the remainder of Judge Michael A. Toto’s term.
Mr. Toto resigned to take a position as a state superior court judge in New Brunswick.
Since Mr. McGowan had been appointed only for the interim, the borough began pursuing his replacement in October, said Business Administrator Denise Jawidzik.
The borough’s Personnel Committee interviewed three candidates before making a recommendation to the mayor.
Councilman John Longo, a member of the Personnel Committee, said Ms. Shamy was selected because of her professional qualifications and availability.
"We were looking for an individual who had freer time constraints," Mr. Longo said. "Ms. Shamy was a perfect fit for us."
Ms. Shamy’s term will take effect Jan. 1.
