Jack Freidenrich of Pennington, former assistant commissioner and state highway engineer for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, died Dec. 28 at the Greenwood House.
Born in New York City, he resided in Ewing Township 35 years before moving to Pennington.
Mr. Freidenrich was a graduate of Southern Methodist University and was a civil engineer. Since joining the State Highway Department in 1949, he became one of the nation’s leaders in transportation, holding key positions with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. He was chosen as the 1988 Distinguished Engineer of the year by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and had a number of resolutions presented in his honor by both the New Jersey Senate and New Jersey Assembly. After retirement he served as a consultant with the RBA Group.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Son of the late Heil and Sophie Freidenrich, he is survived by his wife Joy Mazin Freidenrich; two sons Jeffrey Freidenrich and his fiancé Ann Warner of Coral Springs, Fla.; Scott and his wife Lisa Freidenrich of Westfield; a sister, Esther Shapiro; and three grandchildren, Lauren, Lindsay and Steven.
Funeral services are Sunday at 11 a.m. at Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, 1534 Pennington Road, Ewing Township.
