Manny Ubilla is the third-leading scoring on the Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s basketball team. The junior guard, a graduate of Freehold Township High School, is averaging 12 points game as well as 2.5 assists and 4.6 rebounds per contest. He has a career-high of 25 (in a win over Wagner).
The Knights are 8-8 including 3-2 in Northeast Conference play.
Ubilla, a 1,000-point career scoring at Freehold Township, starred at Lackawanna (Pa) after graduating high school. In his two years at the Pennsylvania college, he scored 1,000 points.
Ubilla was the Shore area’s Player of the Year his senior year at Freehold Township.
Reid Wissner of Manalapan defeated 43 fellow handicappers to win Freehold Raceway’s Harness Racing Handicapping Contest, which was held on Martin Luther King Day Jan. 15.
Wissner amassed a bankroll of $393 to win the top prize of $2,200. John Golden of Drexel Hill, Pa. was second with a bankroll of $355 and took home the second-place money of $1,100. Third place with earnings of $308 was Nicholas Fazzolari of Colts Neck. His third-place prize was $528.
Fourth place ($352) went to Sal Bottone of Westport, Conn., with a bankroll of $288 and fifth lace went to Robert LaConte of West Patterson and Raymond Burnett of Monmouth Junction, who both bankrolled $263 from betting on 10 races and earned $110 in prize money. For winning and placing second, Wissner and Golden gained entry to the 2007 National Harness Handicapping Championship at the Meadowlands in April.
The Alumni Softball League is now accepting registration for its Sunday Slo-Modified Pitch League in Manalapan. The league is also looking for umpires and will train interested candidates.
