Animal abusers need tougher punishments
To the editor:
To all animal lovers last week an unbelievable story was on the front page of a daily newspaper a sick individual from Raritan Township killed two of his cats from abuse and rage.
The third cat was put to sleep from abuse. Belle Mead Animal Hospital reported one cat was bleeding from the mouth and ears, hair torn out of parts of the body and broken body parts from this despicable individual.
This person and his wife still have two cats left that they have "rights" to know of their whereabouts. His sentence $5,000 fine, anger management and cannot buy any type of animal for two years.
First of all, they both need punishment and let’s give 27 years for the death of three cats (each cat has nine lives, as they say) and a fine he cannot afford. This is how serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer got started, by killing and abusing animals and then moved onto people.
Do we want him and his wife on our streets or neighborhood?
We are the animal’s strength, voice and hope! Let’s start protecting them, for animals are man’s best friends.
Let’s get the scum off the streets, give jail time and stop giving them a slap on the wrist. This has been going on too long. Let’s take a stand and punish these despicable people.
I don’t even know if there is a cure for people like this, but they should be locked up.

President’s Iraq plan deserves our support
To the editor:
I am writing in response to the Jan. 25th letter by Chris Giblin, "Dems need to fight war plans vigorously."
I felt it necessary to respond to Mr. Giblins’ article of surrender. I have a family member in Iraq, who has a very high rank in intelligence. He is not pleased at how the war is going. There have been mistakes made, as have been made in every war.
He feels that if the Democrats who are in Congress today were there on Dec. 7, 1941, they would have impeached Pres. Franklin Roosevelt for not knowing the attack on Pearl Harbor was coming. They would have investigated Gen. MacArthur for attacking the Island of Tarawa, with great loses, rather than taking the fight directly to the next island; Iwo Jima.
There were many mistakes made in many wars but adjustments were made. There was never a press nor a political group that actually rooted for the United States to lose, as we have today.
I have first-hand knowledge that our troops carry on the fight without political thought. They do their duty regardless.
But when they watch CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC they wonder what war is being reported. When Senators such as Richard Durbin, D-Ill., compares our troops to Nazis, how do you think this affects our troops? When Nancy Pelosi, D-Ca., states she supports the troops but wants to limit their funding, this takes the heart out of our brave soldiers.
Isn’t it amazing that all of the Democrats that supported the war, on the basis of intelligence from France, Germany, England, Egypt, Jordan and the entire United Nations, now have the ability, when things are not going according to plan, to bail out? It would be nice if our president, who has been steadfast and carries the burden of the world on his shoulders, had the same options.
Mr. Giblin I have news for you. The American people did not elect liberal Democrats to wave the white flag. The American electorate, in every poll, wants victory, not surrender. With the press hammering the president every night on the news, the American people became understandably disgruntled, and voted for change.
Wake up, sir. The change was not surrender but victory. The American people are impatient for results. Change was not surrender; but victory.
Mistakes were made in Iraq. I was told by a high ranking officer that the Iraqi army should not have been disbanded and Baghdad should have been secured sooner with more troops. We are now making that adjustment and the president needs a chance for victory.
Before the congressional elections, many Democrats including Hillary Clinton, D-NY, Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Rep. Pelosi were whining that we needed more troops. Now only two months later they disagree with the president’s new adjustment of 21,000 new troops. It is obvious that they put their own power over the cause of victory and the lives of our brave troops.
You see, if we leave Iraq as we left Vietnam, when Democrats voted against funding the South Vietnam army as was part of the Paris Peace accords, all hell will break loose.
We will see the same killing that we saw after we left Vietnam. Millions were killed by Pol Pot in Laos, as will hundreds of thousands be killed by feuding factions in Iraq, supported by Iran.
Worse yet, if we leave without victory, we will leave the entire country of Iraq in the hands of the Iranians. This will create a staging area for terrorism the likes of which will make 9-1-1 pale. When the president of Iran recently said that the United States and Israel will be wiped off the face or the earth what does Mr. Giblin think we should do?
Talk to them, bribe them, give them the nuclear reactors as Pres. Clinton gave the North Koreans? No, we should prepare and let them know the consequences. We must protect ourselves and our future generations.
Like Pres. Harry Truman, who left office with a 22 percent approval rating, Pres. Bush is a visionary. He does not put his finger in the air and test poll numbers as Pres. Clinton did, he does what he feels is best for America, and to hell with polls.
He understands that we must face the enemy where he lives, there is no talking to this enemy; they want us dead. They hate our way of life, our religions and our grand diverse societies. The spineless Europeans, except England and Poland, carry on as they did in pre-World War ll. They make deals with the very enemies who plot their demise.
President Bush understands this, as do our military commanders, and we must support them.
