After weeks of struggling on the offensive side of the court, the Robbinsville High School girls’ varsity basketball team made a lot of its shots in its 58-37 home loss versus South Hunterdon this past Tuesday.
Jen Bryan gave one of her best offensive performances of the season with 13 points, including a three-pointer. Nicole Douglass, who has been a bright spot for the Ravens the entire season, chipped in with 8 points.
In the early stages of the contest, the Ravens played very well and they trailed by just 3 points (12-9) after the opening quarter. Unfortunately, South Hunterdon was able to increase its lead with every quarter in spite of Robbinsville’s improved offense. Nonetheless, Laura Greb (5 points), Shannon Boyne (5 point), Christie Wham (4 points) and Kate Connolly (2 points) all were able to put up points for the losing side.
Something had to give this past Saturday as Robbinsville searched for its first varsity win against a then winless Princeton team. Playing in front of its own hometown fans, Princeton had a slight advantage and used it to build up a 14-2 first-quarter lead, which it eventually milked into a 32-15 win.
Although Robbinsville played much better in the second half, it is not a big comeback team that can make up huge deficits. Even so, Douglass (6 points) and Greb (5 points) did have solid games in defeat. Connolly made a field goal and Brittany DeAngelis connected on a pair of foul shots.
Last Thursday at Florence, the Ravens ran into a talented Flashes’ team playing at the top of its game. The Flashes broke out to a 23-4 first-quarter lead to take early control of a game they eventually won 64-25. However, the Ravens never gave up and consequently they were able to outscore the Flashes 11-8 in the last eight minutes of the contest. Connolly had a big day with six field goals for 12 points. Bryan also had a stellar 7-point effort while Greb, B. DeAngelis and Boyne each netted a basket for the Ravens.
Even so, the 37 points the Ravens scored this past Monday were a positive sign that the offense is definitely starting to come around.
Robbinsville was scheduled to have hosted Hamilton West this past Tuesday. Robbinsville is scheduled at Ewing on Friday. It is scheduled to host Pemberton next Monday and Nottingham next Tuesday.
