MONROE — A township police officer sustained a minor injury after his cruiser collided with another vehicle on Cranbury-South River Road on Wednesday morning.
Patrol Officer Richard Livingston, 25, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was treated for cuts to his right hand.
The accident occurred when Officer Livingston attempted to stop a motor vehicle on Cranbury-South River Road at about 8:30 a.m., police said.
Officer Livingston was parked on the southbound lane’s shoulder monitoring traffic when he saw a driver in the northbound lane break a motor vehicle law, police said. Sgt. Michael Lloyd, of the Police Department’s traffic safety unit, would not disclose the type of violation.
Officer Livingston activated the siren and lights on his 2006 Ford Crown Victoria and pulled out into the southbound lane to make a U-turn, police said.
As he was pulling out, a 2003 Ford van driven by Jeffery Milling, 49, of Old Bridge, struck the police cruiser on the driver-side rear door, police said. Mr. Milling was heading south in the southbound lane, police said.
Officer Livingston was taken to the hospital where he was released later that day, police said.
Sgt. Lloyd said Officer Livingston has returned to work.
Mr. Milling did not suffer injuries, police said.
The department’s internal board is reviewing the accident to determine who is at fault, Sgt. Lloyd said. No charges have been filed.
Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is investigating. Witnesses should contact Sgt. Lloyd at (732) 521-0222, ext. 126.
