Here’s how to apply for licenses

What to bring when applying for a civil union license

For gay couples applying for civil union licenses, there are a few things they need to know.
City Clerk Lori Buckelew advises couples to go to the Lambertville Web site — lambertvillenj.org — click on "city departments," then "Board of Health" and finally "civil union" to read what is needed to apply.
Lambertville will be open at midnight Feb. 19 to accommodate couples who want to get the 72-hour waiting period under way. Stockton and West Amwell, however, will reopen Feb. 20, the day after the Presidents Day holiday.
Couples going to Lambertville at midnight can just show up without an appointment, Ms. Buckelew said. She advises couple to fill out the application prior to coming in. A copy can be downloaded on the Web site.
Ms. Buckelew said it will take about five to 10 minutes to process each application, and she will stay early Monday morning until they are completed.
Couples in Stockton can go to the municipal building anytime Monday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Those in West Amwell can come in between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays.
Couples must come in with one witness over the age of 18 who knows both of them. There is a $28 filing fee.
If either person was previously married, they need a copy of the divorce or death certificate or annulment papers. If they were in a domestic partnership and do not plan a civil union with that person, that partnership must be dissolved.
Couples must apply for licenses in the municipality they or one of them resides in. Those who are not New Jersey residents can apply in the municipality the civil union will be performed, but it is only valid in that municipality.
The application is valid for six months from the time it is accepted unless there is prior approval for an extension, up to one year.
Couples must bring copies of birth certificates, driver’s licenses, passports or state identification; proof of residency; and a Social Security card or Social Security number.
Once the license is issued, it is valid for 30 days.
