A Titusville house was rendered uninhabitable by an early Tuesday morning fire.
"Investigators confirmed that the fire originated in the bedroom, but the exact cause remains under investigation," Hopewell Township police Chief George Meyer said Wednesday.
The fire, reported at 5:30 a.m., was at the 10 Bethany Ave. residence of Craig Bodine, 36.
Responding to the alarm, police arrived to find Mr. Bodine and Brian Curtiss, 33, who had spent the night at the residence, safely outside.
"Flames were already erupting from a front window," Chief Meyer said. "Officers were unable to enter the home or attempt to fight the fire due to the intensity of the flames."
According to Messrs. Bodine and Curtiss, they were in the kitchen area preparing breakfast when they smelled smoke. When they checked the bedroom they discovered the fire.
The entire first floor of the home suffered severe heat, smoke and water damage.
Firefighters from Titusville’s Union Fire Company, Pennington Fire Company and Hopewell Fire Department were aided by West Trenton Fire Company, Union Rescue Squad and Hopewell Valley Emergency Services.
Union Fire Chief Erick Burd directed operations.
Officers from the Mercer County fire marshal’s office, the Mercer County prosecutor’s office, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services and the township Police Department are investigating the blaze. Handling the case for the township police are Detective Dan McKeown and Patrolman James Hoffman.
