Funeral Consumers Alliance of Princeton to meet March 18

   The 51st annual meeting of the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Princeton (formerly the Princeton Memorial Association) will take place at the Princeton Public Library on Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. Josh Slocum, national authority on funeral regulation and funeral scams, will dispel costly myths and misunderstandings. Admission is free to public.
   Surveys show that most adults do not know their rights when it comes to funeral arrangements. They do not know:
   • that they don’t have to buy a casket for cremation;
   • that embalming isn’t usually required by law, and
   • that New Jersey, like most states, preserves your right to care for your own dead without using a funeral home.
   Mr. Slocum, executive director of the national Funeral Consumers Alliance and a recognized expert on consumer rights and funeral law, will explain:
   • How your rights in the funeral transaction are protected by the Federal Trade Commission;
   • How to avoid expensive sales pitches and spend your funeral dollars wisely, and
   • How to plan ahead for survivors without locking your money up in risky, prepaid funeral plans widely advertised by mortuaries and insurance companies.
   The Funeral Consumers Alliance of Princeton, Inc., is a not-for-profit educational organization serving Princeton and the surrounding area, dedicated to promoting informed advance planning for funeral and memorial arrangements.
