M. Lloyd Van Doren

Montgomery farmer
   
FREEHOLD — M. Lloyd Van Doren died Friday at CentraState Medical Center. He was 89.
   Born in New Brunswick, he resided in Montgomery Township for 80 years before moving to Freehold in 1998.
   Mr. Van Doren owned and operated the Van Doren family farm in Montgomery Township from 1945 until 1984. In 1957, he began working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture while still maintaining the farm until his retirement in 1973.
   He was a graduate of Rutgers University College of Agriculture and a member of the Alpha Zeta fraternity.
   He was a Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.
   He was a member of the New Jersey Agriculture Society, charter member and past president of Griggstown Volunteer Fire Company, former member and chairman of Montgomery Township Recreation Commission and trustee and officer of the Griggstown Cemetery Association.
   He served as elder and deacon of the Griggstown Reformed Church and was a member of the Griggstown Sportsman Club.
   Son of the late Martin Luther and Della Tingley Van Doren, father of the late Donna Jean Hutcheson, brother of the late Gertrude Glynn, he is survived by his wife of 64 years Evelyn M. Peters Van Doren; son Thomas L. Van Doren of Sanger Texas; sister Jean Tappen of Metuchen; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
   The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Griggstown Reformed Church, 1065 Canal Road, Griggstown.
   Burial will follow in the Griggstown Cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Griggstown Reformed Church Memorial Fund, 1065 Canal Road, Princeton, NJ 08540.

William M. Sloane


Retired corporate attorney
   
MONTGOMERY — William M. Sloane died Wednesday at Stonebridge at Montgomery. He was 86.
   Born in Paris, he lived in Princeton most of his life.
   An attorney, he practiced corporate law in New York City and Greenwich, Conn.
   He served as a Marine aviator in World War II, flying a dive bomber in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and two clusters for heroism and extraordinary achievement above and beyond the call of duty during combat missions from 1944 to 1945. He was also awarded the Air Medal for meritorious duty.
   After the war, he graduated from Princeton University, where he was co-captain of the hockey team and a member of the varsity soccer team. He obtained his law degree from New York Law School.
   Before his retirement, he worked as a fundraiser for Princeton University.
   He was an avid golfer and enjoyed art and history.
   Husband of the late Martha Chamberlin, who died in 1988 after 43 years of marriage, brother of the late James R. Sloane, his twin brother, and Cornelia McConnell, he is survived by daughters Martha E. Sloane of Nyack, N.Y. and Isabel H. Sloane of New York City; sons Alexander J. Sloane of New York City, William M. Sloane Jr. of Lambertville and Ward C. Sloane of Washington, D.C.; and grandchildren Jesse Robbins and Nick Robbins of New York City.
   A memorial service was held Monday.

Stamatis Golfinopoulos


In real estate business
   
Stamatis "Sam" Golfinopoulos of Princeton died Saturday at home. He was 78.
   Born in Pyrgos, Greece, he moved to Worcester, Mass. in 1954 and Mercer County in 1955.
   He was involved in commercial real estate and was a primary force behind the development of the Route 1 corridor in Mercer County.
   As a young man in Greece, he worked as a pharmacist and for one year served in the Greek Merchant Marine.
   After moving to Mercer County he formed his own painting contracting company, S&J Painting, which is still in business.
   He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Trenton and later Hamilton for 50 years. He served as parish board member and building committee chairman.
   He was treasurer of the Elytis Chair Fund at Rutgers University and was a member of the Order of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association Trenton Chapter 72 for many years. He was also a member of the Nassau Club of Princeton, and the Masons, Valley of Central Jersey. In 2001 he was honored for his contributions to Hellenic culture and learning by the Hellenic Link organization of New Jersey.
   He enjoyed backgammon and winemaking, bottling his wine under the Uncle Sam’s label. For over 30 years he enjoyed spending time at his Long Beach Island house.
   Son of the late Theodore and Maria Golfinopoulos, brother of the late Eugenia Golfinopoulos, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kassiani; son and daughter-in-law Theodore S. and Eva of Montgomery; daughter and son-in-law Maria S. and Jordan Yuelys of Rockleigh; sister Theodora of Athens, Greece; sister-in-law Eleni Konstantakis and her son Nontas; brother-in-law Christos Kyriakos; and grandchildren Nicoletta, Adrianna and Alexandra Yuelys and Kassiani Golfinopoulos.
   The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Hamilton Township.
   Burial will be in Greeenwood Cemetery, Hamilton.
   Visiting hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

NEWTOWN, Pa. — Lothar S. Sander died Saturday at Pennswood Village. He was 84.
   Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Mr. Sander lived in Princeton from 1962 to 2002.
   He was a chemist at NL Industries of Hightstown and Betz Inc. of Trevose, Pa.
   Mr. Sander earned a bachelor’s degree from McGill University in Montreal.
   He was an avid tennis player, photographer and gardener.
   Husband of the late Greta Sander, he is survived by his son, Steve, of Denver and daughter Miriam of Boulder, Colo.

MONTGOMERY — Paul Emile Tellier died Feb. 27 at University Medical Center at Princeton. He was 80.
   Born in Nashua, N.H., he lived in New Brunswick and Highland Park before moving to Montgomery in 1974.
   He was a district line supervisor at Public Service Electric & Gas Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1988.
   Mr. Tellier was a graduate of St. Peter’s High School in New Brunswick and attended Rutgers University.
   He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.
   Son of the late Honore and Justine Tellier, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan Witt Tellier; son and daughter-in-law Marc and Patricia Tellier; daughter and son-in-law Paulette and Richard Russo; and sister Joan Polgar.
   There will be no calling hours and a private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Former Princeton resident
   
WASHINGTON CROSSING, Pa. — Dorian Deegan Lindbloom died Feb. 27 after a 26-month battle with lung cancer. She was 65.
   Born in Dublin, Ireland, she was a former resident of Lahaska, Pa. and Princeton.
   She owned arts and antiques shops in Lahaska and New Hope, Pa.
   She moved to the U.S. in 1963 following her marriage in London and developed a passion for American arts and antiques, leading to the opening of her two stores.
   She is survived by her husband, Carl; daughters Cara, Hali and Niev; sisters Pamela and Lucy; brothers John and Ken; and four grandchildren.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

West Windsor resident
   
WEST WINDSOR — Virginia M. Dobson died Sunday at Park Place Center after a brief illness. She was 89.
   Born and raised in West New York, where she lived most of her life, she was a resident of Hillsborough and Toms River before moving to West Windsor about four years ago.
   She was a homemaker and former member of the Berkley Township Women’s Club. In recent years, her free time consisted of reading and watching television.
   Wife of the late Walter Dobson, who died in 1992, she is survived by a son, Donald W. Dobson of Spring Lake Heights; daughter Barbara Salierno of West Windsor; brother Russell Von der Linden of Dumont; grandchildren Kara Krieger of East Windsor and Mark C. Salierno of Newman, Ga.; and great-grandchildren Carter M. Salierno and Lauren E. Krieger.
   The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 Route 206, Hillsborough.
   Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
   Burial will be in the Rocky Hill Cemetery.

Mary V. Swinnerton

Bookkeeper at Clayton’s
   
LAWRENCE — Mary V. Swinnerton died Thursday at home. She was 92.
   Born in Johnstown, Pa., Mrs. Swinnerton came to Trenton in 1921 and moved to Lawrence in 1929.
   She retired from her lifelong career as a bookkeeper in 1983 with over 16 years of service with the former H.P. Clayton dry goods store in Palmer Square, Princeton and was previously employed by the Frank E. South Cadillac-Oldsmobile dealership in Princeton for 17 years.
   In her retirement from 1983 to 2003, she managed Richard’s Farm Market on the family farm on Quakerbridge Road.
   She was a member of Girls Friendly Society, Women’s Professional Club of Princeton and a charter member of Good Fellowship of YWCA during World War II.
   Daughter of the late Samuel and Josephine Scudderi Vaccaro, wife of the late Stanley H. Swinnerton, sister of the late James, Carmella, Tillie and Ann Vaccaro, sister-in-law of the late John Grochala and Margaret Vaccaro, she is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Guy and Josephine Vaccaro of Burlington, Anthony and Phyllis Vaccaro of Columbus, Joseph Vaccaro of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and John and Robbie Vaccaro of Lawrence; sister Frances Grochala of Columbus; and many nieces and nephews.
   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m., today at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 214 Nassau St., Princeton.
   Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
