   Golf is an expensive sport.
Especially for a high school student.
To help defray some of the costs of an upcoming golf trip, the Lawrence High School golf team hosted a volleyball fundraiser last Thursday night.
The Cardinals are sending five golfers to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina from April 3 to April 7. Lawrence will compete in the Pal Metto High School Golf Championship during its trip along with playing several rounds on various courses to get ready for the Colonial Valley Conference season.
The golfers have to foot much of the costs, but the volleyball fundraiser helps cover some of the incidentals that pop up during the trip.
"We’ve done it in the past," said Lawrence golf coach Gregg Zenerovitz. "We use it to help defray the cost of all the litle things that come up that nobody thinks about."
The volleyball competition is usually a popular event for the school and is really more fun than fundraiser.
"Every little bit helps," said Zenerovitz, "but it’s more fun for the school. The students really look forward to it and now that we have the gym we can have it."
Along with the volleyball fundraiser, the golf team is planning a badmitton tournament for the end of the month.
This year’s spring trip is a bit bigger than in previous years. The golf team has gone to Ocean City, Maryland and competed in competitions and trained on courses in that area during other spring breaks.
The Cardinals may wish they could have started their spring training earlier since the CVC season starts the day before they leave.
Lawrence is scheduled to open with a match against Notre Dame, April 2 at Princeton Country Club.
The Cardinals will want to make the most of their trip and get plenty of time on the courses because that training could pay off as soon as they get back.
The Cardinals are scheduled to play in the Cherry Valley Tournament on Monday, April 9.
"It will be a good preparation for the season," said Zenerovitz. "We leave and the next thing we know we’ll be in the middle of our season."
After the Cherry Valley Tournament, Lawrence is scheduled to host Steinert and Hamilton at Green Acres Country Club on Tuesday, April 10 and Wednesday, April 11, respectively.
That means the Cardinals are set for several rounds of golf very early in the season.
While the volleyball fundraiser will offset some of the costs, Zenerovitz thanked atheletic director Ken Mason’s help in covering the entry fees for the Pal Metto Championship.
