TRENTON An East Windsor man charged with the September stabbing death of a woman with whom he lived is under indictment for murder.
Donald Zampini, 70, of Wyndmoor Drive, is accused of stabbing 63-year-old Barbara Morris with a household knife. A Mercer County grand jury returned the indictment on Feb. 23, said Casey DeBlasio, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.
Mr. Zampini, also indicted for possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon, will participate in a pre-arraignment conference on March 16, Ms. DeBlasio said. He is being held in the county correction center in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Public Defender Charles Centinaro said at a bail hearing in September that Mr. Zampini was suffering from depression at the time of the alleged murder on Sept. 1, according to Assistant Prosecutor Skylar Weissman. The public defender’s office will not comment on the case, spokesman Tom Rosenthal said Wednesday.
East Windsor police said they responded to a 9-1-1 call at 12:57 a.m. from a person they did not identify who said Ms. Morris had been murdered and that Mr. Zampini was attempting to commit suicide. When they arrived at the house, police said, they found Ms. Morris’ body in the living room, where Mr. Zampini also was found.
Mr. Zampini had cuts and bruises on his hand and appeared to be losing consciousness due to the ingestion of over-the-counter sleep aids, police added.
An autopsy revealed that Ms. Morris’ cause of death was "multiple stab wounds to the body and a perforating stab wound to the left lung," according to Ms. DeBlasio.
Ms. Morris was employed through St. Peter’s Hospital as a registered nurse for the Clearbrook Adult Community in Monroe Township. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Hightstown.
According to property records, she owned the Wyndmoor Drive home.
