Activities, programs slated at senior center

The Monroe Township Senior Center, Municipal Plaza, will offer a variety of upcoming activities. To register for programs, call (732) 521-6111, unless otherwise indicated.

AARP-trained volunteer tax counselors are available to provide seniors with tax-return assistance on Mondays and Tuesdays at the center. Transportation is available on Tuesdays only. Call to make an appointment.

“A Star Is Born” (rated R, 140 minutes) starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Krisofferson will be shown at 1 p.m. on March 20 at the center. Milton Paris, host of WCTC-AM Radio’s “Getting Ahead in Business,” will introduce the film. Refreshments will be served. Advance registration is requested. Transportation is limited.

“De-Stress Your Life” is planned for 1:30 p.m. on March 21. Teri Mans, a health educator with the Middlesex County Public Health Department, will offer a program on how to identify and deal with the physical and mental stresses of life. Mans also will demonstrate relaxation exercises. Advance registration is requested.

A discussion on the traditional foods of Easter and Passover is set for 1:30 p.m. on March 22. Chef Steve Ferri will offer cooking tips. Participants will be asked to share memorial holiday traditions. Advance registration is requested.

Ian Gallagher will perform Irish songs at 1:30 p.m. on March 23. Homemade Irish soda bread will be served. Advance registration is requested. Space is limited.

The Friends of the Senior Center Inc. will sponsor a Whist Party at 1 p.m. on March 27. Tickets cost $5 per person. For more information and to register, call the Friends at (732) 521-2101.

Michael Kownacky and Ted Otten of WWFM Classical Radio Network will discuss the life and works of actress Angela Lansbury at 2 p.m. on March 29. Best known as mystery writer and sleuth Jessica Fletcher on the television show “Murder, She Wrote,” Lansbury also has had an active film and Broadway career. The lecture will celebrate her life with selections from her stage, film and TV works. Advance registration is requested.

The Monroe Township Senior Center Green Thumbs, a group of houseplant enthusiasts, will share their love of plants and discuss related issues at 11 a.m. on the third Tuesday of every month.

Seniors are invited to play chess at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays at the center.

“Victory at Sea,” the documentary about the U.S. Navy in World War II, will continue at 10:30 a.m. on the first and fourth Tuesdays. Mike Ferreira will host. Advance registration is requested.

A Parkinson’s support group meets at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the center.

Free blood-pressure screenings are offered on a first-come basis from 1-3 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month.
