George W. Allen

   George W. Allen, 89, died Tuesday, March 13, at his home in Monroe.
   Born in Windsor, he was raised in Cranbury before moving to Monroe in 1940.
   During World War II he served in the United States Army in the 1st Infantry Division, 26th Regiment (Blue Spader) and was involved in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. He later retired from the Army Reserves under the rank of major. He was employed by the state of New Jersey as an assistant chief for the New Jersey forest fire service for 32 years before his retirement in 1979. He owned and operated, along with his son and daughter, a choose and cut Christmas tree farm in Monroe Township.
   He was a councilman in Monroe Township and served as police commissioner for four years. He was a charter member and first president of Applegarth Vol. Engine Co. No. 1. He was a commissioner of the Monroe Township Shade Tree Commission and was an assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 105, Monroe Township. He was a member of the VFW Post 262 in Monroe Township.
   His wife, Adele H. (Stachurski), died in 1986. He is survived by his son, Thomas L. and his wife, Susan S., of Monroe; his daughter, Margaret A. Taub and her husband, Richard S., of South Brunswick; two grandchildren, Megan J. and Thomas W. Allen; and six step-grandchildren, David, Michelle, Michael and Sarah Taub and Lara and Gary Munch.
   A funeral service will be held today (Friday), March 16, at 12:30 p.m. at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, 305 Rhode Hall Road, Monroe Township. Interment will follow at the William C. Doyle N.J. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown. Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post No. 262 Monroe Township.
