Suspect arrested in theft of nature area fence

RED BANK – An arrest has been made in connection with the theft of several sections of aluminum fence from in front of the Bell Haven Nature Area on Locust Street.

Robert Herold, 29, Highlands, was arrested March 5 at around 4 p.m. after Red Bank police received a phone call from a Locust Avenue resident who reported that a man was removing the aluminum fencing that borders the nature area, according to Lt. Steve McCarthy of the Red Bank Police Department.

“The police found Herold removing sections of the fence,” McCarthy said last week. “They later learned that Herold had, on two prior occasions, removed a total of 13 sections of the fence.”

Although the sections of the fence police found in Herold’s truck at the time of his arrest were reinstalled, there are still sections missing from the fence, according to McCarthy.

McCarthy said that the approximate value of the fence sections are $60 each, and that Herold is accused of fourth-degree theft in the amount of $780.

Herold was released on a summons and is scheduled for arraignment at Red Bank Municipal Court March 15, according to McCarthy.
