AROUND CRANBURY: Donate old prom dresses

Around Cranbury is a weekly column highlighting the comings and goings around the village.

Mike Stehn, of Cranbury, would like to encourage Cranbury residents to participate in the second annual Prom and Party Dress Drive.
Mike is assisting the St. Paul (Princeton) Youth group in collecting gently used, dry-cleaned prom dresses for Trenton High School junior and senior girls. Last year, 30 dresses were donated.
High school students can drop off the dresses, with any accessories attached in a bag looped over the hanger, in the Princeton High School Main office or guidance department. Middle School parents can call 409-9232 to schedule a pick up.
This drive will run until the end of March.
Looking ahead to April, Mike also will be coordinating a book drive of text and reference books for a university in Africa. This is another successful project that Mike was involved with last year and looks forward to working on again. Watch this column for more information.

The Cranbury Arts Council’s 10th anniversary gala is just days away.
This year’s honorees are Sue Leson and Marty Hayden, council founders. Past honorees at CAC galas include Tamara Woronczuk (2005), Francine Hannay (2004), George Stave (2002) and Lee Stang Harr (2001).
Lee Stang Harr also was a founder of CAC. A wonderful artist, Lee passed away in 2000, but her legacy lives on through her art. The large mural in the Cranbury Post Office was a project Lee painted as a gift to Cranbury.
In Lee’s memory, the CAC created the Lee Stang Harr Student Art Award at Princeton High School in 2001.

The Cranbury Public Library will present Cranbury Jazz on Friday, March 23 at 8 p.m. in the library’s large group room.
The Cranbury Jazz ensemble consists of Art Zysk on trumpet, Mike Bacorn on saxophone, Ben Kennedy on piano, trombone and vocals, Bernhard Geiger on upright bass and band manager Paul Venanzi on drums, clarinet and saxophone.
The "mostly Cranbury" quintet first performed on Cranbury Day 2006. They play jazz standards, and feature two favorites, "When Sonny Gets Blue" and "Girl from Ipanema" on their Web site, www.cranburyjazz.com.
Admission to the program is free, and includes the opportunity to hear your very own applause on the live CD recording they will make that night.
Howard Zogott, public library director, said "Having heard several of the performers play separately, I’m really looking forward to hearing them play as an ensemble."
