Mary Lou Mazzola
Mary Lou Mazzola, 63, of Hopewell died March 15 at the University Medical Center at Princeton.
Raised in Sigel, Pa., she graduated from Brookville High School and attended Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
Before retiring, she worked at Harris Interactive in Princeton
Preceded in death by her parents Pearle and Donna McNeil, Mrs. Mazzola is survived by her husband, Richard Mazzola; sons, Michael Mazzola and his wife Tracey of Ewing, and David Mazzola and his wife Janet of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; grandchildren Emily, Madison, Mac and Ali; sisters, Edith McCanna of Marienville, Pa., and Betty Murdock of Franklin, Pa.; and many friends.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the Cromwell-Immordino Memorial Home, 71 E. Prospect St., Hopewell.
Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Hopewell, with interment following in Highland Cemetery, Hopewell.

Louis Stephen Paferi
Louis Stephen Paferi, 80, died March 15 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington.
Born in Trenton, Mr. Paferi was a resident of Hopewell.
He worked for many years for the New Jersey Department of Transportation as an area supervisor. He also worked for Valley Oil Company, Hopewell.
He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a member of the Marine Corps League.
He was an usher at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, and spent considerable time helping with the church’s annual picnic.
Preceded in death by his parents, Ignatius and Mary Pafery, he is survived by his wife Lillian Paferi; children Gary Paferi and his wife Kathy of Doylestown, Pa., Stephen Paferi of Corvallis, Mont., Linda Paferi and her husband Steve Tepper of Monkton, Md., and Michael Paferi of Hopewell; a sister Grace Virok of Texas; and five nieces.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Cromwell-Immordino Memorial Home, 71 E. Prospect St., Hopewell.

Herbert L. Birum Jr.
Herbert L. Birum Jr., 94, of Carversville, Pa., formerly of Titusville, died Jan. 26 at home.
Born in a log cabin in Saco, Mont., Mr. Birum moved to Trenton during his adolescence and left school to work in the family wreathe-making business. He became an inventor and manufacturer in the construction industry, holding more that 66 patents. He helped with the construction of the dirigible hanger at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station.
He served for 30 years on the board of trustees of the New Jersey Youth Correctional Center, including five years as chairman. In 1974, he was appointed to the New Jersey Correctional Master Plan Council to help develop a master plan for the state’s correctional system. He also was past chairman of the Optometric Education Advisory Committee of the New Jersey Department of Higher Education, past president of the South Hunterdon Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the board of trustees of the First Presbyterian Church of Ewing.
He served a two-year term as a director of The International Association of Lions Clubs after his election in June 1957. He was a founding member of the Lions Club of Hopewell Township. A Lion from 1947 until his death, he held numerous offices, including club president and district governor. He helped draft the rules for the use of the Lions emblem and revision of the Board of International Relations, and was responsible for the development of the Lions Sight and Blind Seal Stamp. He received numerous awards, including 10 International President’s Awards, the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation Award and the Ambassador of Goodwill Award, the highest honor bestowed upon association members.
Mr. Birum and his wife Lois hosted Hopewell Township’s annual Pleasant Valley Picnic that continues to this day. They authentically restored the 18th century John Phillips House located on what is now Birum Farm. The house is part of the Pleasant Valley Historic District.
He is survived by his wife, E. Lois Birum; five children, daughter Barbara and George Lance of Easton, Pa., daughter Catherine Halper and Dr. Jeffrey Farber of Carversville, Pa., daughter Dori Charters and Scott Caroll of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, son Robert Charters of Texas, son Ken and Shari Charters of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for April 1 at 1 p.m. at the Carversville Christian Church.
